
She went on to retell other classics, including Tales from the Jungle Book (1985) and Black Beauty (1986). The book became especially popular with teenagers and was honored by the New York Public Library. McKinley published Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast in 1978. She had been a lifelong horse enthusiast, and one of various jobs she held while trying to establish a writing career was managing a horse farm. She briefly attended Dickinson College in Pennsylvania before transferring to Maine’s Bowdoin College, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature and graduated summa cum laude in 1975. Because her father was in the military, her family moved often, and she relied on books to be her consistent companions.
